How Odin Lost his eye? Norse Mythology – the well of Knowledge

                ကမ္ဘာလောကကြီးကို ဖန်တီးပြီးနောက်မှာ Aesir  နတ်ဘုရားတွေရဲ့ ဘုရင်အဖြစ် Asgard မှာနေထိုင်ရင်း သူဟာ ဉာဏ်ပညာရှိတဲ့ နတ်ဘုရားတပါးဖြစ်ပေမဲ့ သူဟာ အရာအားလုံးကို မသိသေးဘူးဆိုတာကို သိခဲ့ပါတယ်။ အဲ့ဒီအတွက်ကြောင့်သူဟာ ဦးထုပ်ရှည်ကြီးကိုဆောင်း ခရီးသွားဝတ်ရုံကြီး ဝတ်လိုက်ပြီး ဥာဏ်ပညာရှာဖွေဖို့အတွက် Biforst ကိုသုံးပြီး Midgard ကိုဆင်း။ နတ်ဘုရားတွေရဲ့ ရန်သူတွေနေထိုင်တဲ့ တောင်ကုန်းတောင်တန်း ကန္တာရတွေအပြည့်နဲ့  လူ့ဘီးလူးတွေနေထိုင်ရာ Jotunheim ကမ္ဘာကြီးထဲကို ဆက်လက်ထွက်ခွာလာခဲ့ပါတယ်။ အန္တရာယ်အမျိုးမျိုးကို ကျော်ဖြတ်ပြီးတဲ့နောက် ခရီးရှည်ကြီးရဲ့ အဆုံးမှာ ကမ္ဘာ့သစ်ပင်ကြီး Yggdrasil (အီဒရာဆေး) ရဲ့ ဒုတိယအမြစ်ကြီးကို ရေပေးရာ Mimir’s ရေတွင်းကြီးဆီကို ရောက်ရှိခဲ့ပါတယ်။ ရေတွင်းရဲ့ ပိုင်ရှင်ကတော့ Odin နဲ့ ဦးလေးတော်စပ်သူ ဥာဏ်ပညာကြီးမားလှတဲ့ လူ့ဘီလူးကြီး mimir ပဲဖြစ်ပါတယ်။ Mimir ဟာ ဒီရေကန်ကြီးထဲကနေ Jhollerhorn ချိုကို သုံးပြီးသူ့ရဲ့ ဉာဏ်ပညာမြင့်မားဖို့အတွက် ခပ်သောက်လေ့ရှိပါတယ်။ နတ်ဘုရား odin က ဉာဏ်ပညာအရင်းမြစ်ဖြစ်တဲ့ကန်ကြီးထဲကနေ ရေတစ်ခွက်ကို တောင်းသောက်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။ နတ်ဘုရားတွေရဲ့ဘုရင် သူ့ရဲ့တူဖြစ်လင့်ကစား Mimir က သူ့ရေတွင်းက ရေကို အလကားသောက်သုံးခွင့်မပြုခဲ့ပါဘူး။ ပေးရမဲ့ တန်ဖိုးက Odin စဥ်းစားထားထက်ကို ကြီးမားလိမ့်မယ်လို့ ပြောခဲ့ပါတယ်။ ဉာဏ်ပညာပိုပြီး ထက်မြက်လာဖို့အတွက် ဘာပဲပေးရပေးရ Odin က ပေးဖို့အဆင့်သင့်ပါပဲ။ Mimir က တန်ဖိုးအနေနဲ့ Odin ရဲ့ မျက်လုံးတစ်ဖက်ကိုဖောက်ပြီး ရေကန်ကြီးထဲကို ပစ်ချခိုင်းခဲ့ပါတယ်။ Odin ကတုံ့ဆိုင်းခြင်းမရှိဘဲ သူ့မျက်လုံးကို ကိုယ်တိုင် နှိုက်ထုတ်လိုက်ပြီးတော့ ရေတွင်းထဲကို ပစ်ချလိုက်ပါတယ်။ နာကျင်မှုကြောင့် အော်တဲ့ Odin ရဲ့ အသံဟာ စကြာဝဠာကြီးတခုလုံးကို ဟိန်းသွားစေခဲ့ပါတယ်။ သူ့ရဲ့ ပေးဆပ်မှုကို အသိမှတ်ပြုတဲ့အနေနဲ့ ရေကန်က ရေကို ဦးချိုနဲ့ခပ်ပြီး တိုက်လိုက်ပါတယ်။ ချိုကရေတွေအကုန်လုံးကို မနားတမ်း ကုန်အောင်သောက်ပြီးတဲ့နောက်မှာတော့ Odin ဟာ သူလိုချင်တဲ့ Knowledge တွေပြည့်ဝသွားခဲ့ပါတယ်။ တစ်လုံးထဲရှိတဲ့ သူ့ရဲ့ မျက်လုံးဟာ အရောင်တွေတောက်လာခဲ့ပြီး ဒဏ်ရာဟာလည်း ပိတ်သွားခဲ့ပါတယ်။ Odin ဟာ အခုဆိုရင် မျက်လုံးနှစ်လုံးထက် တလုံးထဲနဲ့ ကမ္ဘာကြီးကို ပိုမိုရှင်းလင်းစွာ မြင်နိုင်လာခဲ့ပါတယ်။ မျက်လုံးတစ်ဖက်တည်းရှိတဲ့ နတ်ဘုရား မီးလျှံမျက်လုံးနဲ့ နတ်ဘုရားအဖြစ် Odin ကို သိလာခဲ့ကြပါတယ်။

How Odin Lost his eye?  The well of Knowledge

            After creating the world, on the body of the giant Ymir who had been killed by the aesir gods. Odin went on to reign over the world atop his throne in asgard. Even though, he was a wise god, he was aware that he did not know everything. So, he set out on an adventure in search of knowledge. He disguised himself as a wanderer and walked through Jotunheim, the land of giants and enemies of the gods. In this realm lived Mimir, a very ancient deity and uncle of odin. He lived near the well of knowledge. The waters of this well were responsible for feeding igdrozel the tree of worlds. Mimir using the Jhollerhorn horn drank Sacred water and his knowledge of the world increased. Odin went to his uncle's well and asked him to drink the water of knowledge.

Odin : Mimir I'm your nephew and lord of the gods. But, how can i be worthy of my title without true wisdom.

Mimir : Being my kinsmen or lord of the gods does not give you the right to drink from my well. The price is much higher than you can imagine.

Odin : Tell me the price i'm willing to pay it.

Mimir : The price is your eye. I want you to pluck it out and throw it into the well only then will you be able to drink the water from the well of knowledge.

Odin knew that Mimir did not tell jokes. He would have to pay a high price if he were to attain true wisdom. The great god did not flinch and gouged out his own eye. His cry of pain was so loud that it echoed throughout the universe. Odin deposited his eye in the waters of the well and this sacrifice satisfied Mimir. He offered him a horn with the water from his well. And, he asked the god to drink the entire contents at once. After drinking the entire contents of the container, the Father of All was filled with knowledge. A large scar filled the void where his eye had previously been which at times emitted a brightly glowing flame. Odin came to be known as the one-eyed man or the one with the flaming eye. Odin began to see the world much more clearly with only one eye he could see better than when he had to.
